Backround

For more than 50 years, the former Postás Workers’ Hostel has been a defining element of the skyline of District X. The tower, built between 1965 and 1969, was designed by László Kelem, the chief engineer of UVATERV, using prefabricated technology that was considered pioneering at the time. When it was new, the building embodied a progressive spirit, both in its structural solutions and the design of its spatial sequences.

However, the past half-century has left its mark on the building. Its cladding has aged, its formal design has become outdated, and its function is no longer in demand. In 2022, on behalf of Budapesti Ingatlan Nyrt. (BIF), our company was commissioned to develop a comprehensive revitalization plan for the building. Following the transformation, the former hotel can continue to operate as a modern office building.

Concept

The existing proportions and heights of the building provided an opportunity to create a fresh, contemporary appearance. The goal of the new façade design is to refresh the building’s look while ensuring comfort for the office tenants.

The building has undergone a complete renewal both inside and out. After thermal insulation, the façade received a new fiber cement cladding. The façade is divided into three vertical zones. The main mass is defined by horizontal patterns created by parapet walls and ribbon windows. The tower of the stairwell and service areas forms a more solid, homogeneous surface, featuring the BIF Tower and Cepol logos. The third surface is the perforated metal cladding of the emergency staircase, which extends to the tower’s roof level.

Interior layout

The interior spaces were designed with a contemporary, minimalist approach and industrial features. Sustainability was a key consideration in the design: retaining the existing building structures, minimizing new insertions, and adapting to the changed function.

In this way, the BIF Tower can once again become a prominent feature of Budapest’s cityscape.
