The renovation proposal for the iconic Grössling building in Bratislava seeks to preserve its historical and architectural values while revitalizing two main functions: the urban bath and the library. The design was developed in two variants, both sharing the goal of creating a contemporary community space that respects the past. Alongside the spa and the library, an open, green park-like space is also created, serving as a meeting place for both local residents and the wider city population.

Additions and functional relationships

On both sides of the building, new volumes extend the existing structure: the extension facing Kupeľná Street accommodates the new entrance hall of the spa, while the volume on Medená Street provides space for the library expansion and certain spa functions. The spa and the library each receive separate entrances, and an additional accessible approach from the park is also provided for the library. The new building parts feature a glazed, contemporary design, ensuring natural light while maintaining a sense of intimacy.

Recreational spaces

The spa is divided into two zones: a more active first-floor area with changing rooms, new indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, and relaxation spaces, and a quieter second-floor relaxation zone, which is complemented by a salt pool, various saunas, and therapeutic services.

The spa and the library café are served by a shared kitchen, and both functions maintain a direct, year-round connection to the outdoor green spaces.

Library

The main entrance of the library is located at the corner, while a secondary entrance opens towards the park. The ground floor functions as an interactive zone, featuring a children’s section, community workstations, and a café, while the upper floors serve as quiet reading areas. The entire building is characterized by flexible spaces, self-service systems, and a layout suitable for small-scale events.

Shared vision

The aim of the concept is for Grössling to once again become one of the centers of urban life – a community space that both reflects the past and offers opportunities for the future.
